Chesnut Street Theatre, 1853

This is a Philadelphia production, billing itself as a "revival." It uses the Aiken text, as recently expanded to include a new concluding tableau, "Allegory, Little Eva in Heaven." Mrs. Rose Merrifield, almost as well known a Topsy in the 1850s as Mrs. Howard, sings the following songs, well known from contemporary minstrel shows: "Nelly Bly," "Lily Dale" and "Mary Blane." She also dances "a regular African breakdown." "The colored tier has been enlarged" means that more seats have been set aside for blacks to see the play.
