This playbill describes the second week of the
production. It is identical to the PLAYBILL FROM THE PREVIOUS WEEK, except for several cast
changes, notably the fact that now there's no featured
listing of Charles Vincent, "the popular Ethiopian
comedian," doing his minstrel show routine of "Old Black
Joe" (Vincent's name, however, does still appear in the Synopsis)) Although newspaper ads for this production refer to the
person playing Topsy as "Mrs. Frank Budworth," since "Frank Budworth" is featured on
both playbills it seems probable that this was one of the several cases in which Topsy
was personated by a man. The drama still uses the Aiken script (with Deacon Perry, for instance, among the cast), but the "Grand Plantation Scene" it stages "with Special Artists" and novelty acts in Act 2 allows us to see how the play Uncle Tom's Cabin is turning into the "Tom Show." |
