Master Shelby grieves for his Uncle Tom. (continued)
EXCERPT. This long and confusingly edited sequence has no
separate caption. After the scene of young Shelby grieving are a series of
parallel scenes, moving the viewer between the interior of a Quaker home in Ohio
and the exterior of the ferry depot in Kentucky. (The first shot apparently
takes the point-of-view of an agent for the slave-hunters, spying on the Quakers
and Eliza, and the parallel editing suggests that the
Quakers live in the tavern.)
Omitted from the movie clip is the last two-thirds, showing George
and Jim chased to the shore of the river, where they get into a boat and row
away before their pursuers arrive to shoot at them, then showing Eliza and Harry
being helped by Phineas into a wagon, then showing George arriving on the
opposite shore.
