EXCERPT. Only about a third of this long sequence is
included in the movie clip. The whole sequence shows the clear influence of
western movies on this film. The novel's "Fight at the Rocky Pass" is turned
into a shoot-out, and the many and varied camera positions from which shooting
is "shot" indicates how familar even these early film audiences were with the
conventions of representing such a scene.
Omitted are the scenes at the beginning of George
getting into the wagon, the "posse" in pursuit, and the fugitives getting out of
the wagon to climb into the rocks; and the last part of the shooting sequence
(including Marks riding away as fast as he can),
though you can see the triumphant image with which the sequence ends by CLICKING HERE.
