The Billboard began appearing in 1894 as a 4-page trade paper
for the outdoor advertising industry, but within a few years it also became
the bulletin board for America's traveling entertainment industry. Circuses,
minstrel shows, Wild West shows and Tom Shows posted notices, ads,
itineraries and related items to its pages. It thus serves as a good way to
chart the fortunes of the Uncle Tom's Cabin companies in the early 20th
century, from the end of their heyday through their decline as a new
entertainment medium called motion pictures took the place of live
performances across small town America. Accessible below is every reference to the Tom Shows that appeared in The Billboard during the years 1901, 1906 and 19ll. |
