No Ice Floes Worrying This Modern Eliza

Winsome Slave in Duncan Sisters' Show Dances On to Freedom

In the old "Uncle Tom's Cabin" play the role of Eliza called for an actress to black up and make a dash across fake ice, with the wicked Simon Legree's hounds in hot pursuit.

In "Topsy and Eva," the musical version of the old slave melodrama at the Colonial, with the Duncan sisters in the title roles, the Eliza appears as a dusky damsel who hypnotizes Legree with her dancing.

Miss Palmer needed no Simon Legree whip to start her dancing. She has been dancing since she was a mere chick and she proved her proficiency several years ago by winning a place in the classy Zigfield "Midnight Frolic," in the gay days when real refreshments were served on the Amsterdam Theatre roof. Later on she was a ballet specialist in various Broadway shows.

In "Topsy and Eva," she is seen in several solo dances and also in duets with the nimble Dan Brennan, who plays the role of the faithful slave Gee Gee—and dances in the most approved plantation style.
