[From] CALIFORNIA CORRESONDENCE.BANK EXCHANGE, San Francisco, April 1st, 1854. Dear P.— . . . Mr. Charles Burke, the celebrated comedian, arrived out last steamer; last night he made his debut at the American to a densely crowded house, in the comedy of the "People's Lawyer," and the farce of the "Illustrious Stranger." He met with a warm reception, and I think, if he lets the starring system alone, will do well, and become a great favorite. . . . The American Theatre, in this city, under Thorne, has been doing very well with "Uncle Tom's Cabin." The arrival of Mr. Burke has changed the order of performances. . . . |
