Dixon's novel, though popular with the American public, was attacked by a number of critics as racist. Perhaps to try to disarm some of that criticism, either Dixon or his publishers removed two of these first-edition illustrations -- "Tim Shelby" and "Dick" -- from all subsequent reprintings of the novel.
