PERSONALThere are two or three theatrical managers in this country who have received more money from "Uncle Tom's Cabin" than Mrs. Stowe. If authorship were protected here as it is in France, Mrs. Stowe would have obtained a percentage of the copy sold in the United States, a percentage of the receipts of every theatre where it was played, and a liberal price for the privilege of its translation into the several languages. The work would thus have yielded her $300,000 instead of $40,000. |
