Uncle Tomitudes

Due to the superiority of European manufacturing techniques in the 19th century, most of the materials available in this section of the archive were originally produced overseas. It's not clear how widely sold they were in the United States, making the question of how much they can tell us about American culture more complicated. For more on the material artifacts produced in connection with Stowe's novel, see Louise L. Stevenson's essay VIRTUE DISPLAYED: THE TIE-INS OF UNCLE TOM'S CABIN in the site's INTERPRET MODE.
